Each year, the Center for Family Life team looks forward to College, Career, & Community-Building (CCC) Day! Earlier this month, 1,200+ Sunset Park High School (SPHS) students participated in an exciting day of programming designed to expand their knowledge of post-graduation options and build school-wide community.
CFL has played a crucial role in the advocacy for, and in the subsequent creation of, Sunset Park High School. When established in 2009, SPHS became the very first public high school in Sunset Park!
Our ongoing partnership with the faculty and students at SPHS fosters an environment where everyone is dedicated to creating a positive school culture. This is cultivated through our advisory program, internship opportunities, diverse menu of afterschool options, and many annual events.
During College, Career, and Community-Building Day, SPHS students rotated through a variety of activities designed to promote career readiness and community-building. Each floor featured College Panels, College Jeopardy, Career Conversations, and Community-Building challenges!
Upperclassmen were invited to attend college panels sat on by 22 current college students, many of whom were SPHS alumni! The panelists shared valuable insight into the college experience, from academics to social life.
Ninth graders participated in spirited rounds of College Jeopardy! This collegiate adaptation of the popular game was an opportunity for students to test their knowledge of key college terminology they discuss during school-day advisory.
In the gym, students engaged in lively activities that encouraged teamwork and healthy competition. Guided by CFL staff, small groups tackled various team-building challenges!
Students from each grade participated in Career Conversations!
CCC Day volunteers shared their perspectives as working professionals with small groups of 3-5 students. Students had the opportunity to hear from folks in fields such as architecture, law, music production, engineering, journalism, and more. Speakers discussed necessary skills, educational backgrounds, daily routines, and shared their individual professional journeys.
Afterwards, a volunteer remarked “the kids were really engaged and had lots of questions”. We are incredibly grateful to the 87 career guests!
From all of us at Center for Family Life, thank you to everyone who made this year’s CCC Day a blast.
We are already looking forward to next year!
