May: Spring News Roundup

We are pleased to share the monthly programming updates below!

Spring Arts Festival – “New Beginnings”
All seven CFLSP school-based sites participated in a massive, community-wide cross-site collaboration – our first-ever Spring Arts Festival celebrating new beginnings! The week-long festival featured recorded virtual pieces and outdoor, socially-distanced performances and community arts activities at each of CFLSP’s school-based sites. The long-awaited Life Lines Community Arts Program’s spring show is the culminating event in this incredible celebration. A live production by high school-aged performing artists featuring music, dance, theater, and poetry kicked off at 4pm today!
Youth Programming
The Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) will offer project based learning opportunities for 14-15 year olds and real world work experiences for 16-21 year olds for 6 weeks in the summer. MORE ON OUR YOUTH PROGRAMMING

Community Services Program
During such uncertain times, we successfully managed a hybrid drop-off tax program and participated in the IRS Tax Extension until May 15th, serving thousands of people within the Sunset Park Community and beyond! CFLSP’s free tax preparation program ran with extended hours for several months during tax season, and while we projected we’d prepare 2,500 returns, we exceeded our expectations with a total of 3,271 prepared returns and $4,529,394 in refunds! MORE ON OUR COMMUNITY SERVICES PROGRAM

Adult Employment Program
On April 23rd, CFLSP was honored to host Council Member Carlos Menchaca, who took time out of his busy schedule to visit with one of our ESOL classes. The students were thrilled to have the opportunity to speak to the Council Member and share their appreciation for his support, which has enabled the program to provide free ESOL classes. The following week, we launched our career exploration workshops – the first workshop focusing on HHA and Healthcare related careers. These workshops will be presented in English and Spanish! MORE ON OUR ADULT EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM

Cooperative Development Program
CFLSP’s first virtual, bilingual, and national Cooperative Development Training Series got off to a great start, with 30+ participants from 18 different organizations across the country, Canada and the UK. This is the most diverse cohort to be part of the series, with exciting projects that will advance worker cooperative development and strengthen our cooperative movement! MORE ON OUR COOPERATIVE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Family Counseling Program
Last month, Ander Camino and Geraldine Espinoza participated in a collaborative workshop with two other agencies: Legal Information for Families Today (LIFT) and ImmSchools, a program that works with new immigrant families. They collaborated to create a family preparedness workshop based on CFLSP’s Sanctuary Family Project booklet titled “Preparing for your Children’s Future.” LIFT provided the legal component of the workshop, and let families know how they could get a parental designation or stand-by guardianship, while Ander and Geraldine addressed the clinical component of the workshop, by helping families imagine conversations they might have with their partners, children, or potential caregivers on this topic. Parents were involved and engaged, and the workshop was a huge success! MORE ON OUR FAMILY COUNSELING PROGRAM

Test & Trace
On April 29, CFLSP, in partnership with the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, presented a virtual information session on the vaccines. Anita Reyes, Executive Director of the Bronx Neighborhood Health Action Center, led this Spanish-language presentation that included updated vaccination results in New York City, background information on vaccine development and safety, and the importance to individuals, families and communities of ensuring robust participation in this vital vaccination campaign. MORE ON OUR TEST & TRACE PROGRAM
